TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE (By Henry Dike)

TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE by Henry Dike

When will you stop this? When will the lies stop?
Why do you attempt to fly when you can only hop?
For how long will you lie to everybody?
For how much longer can you sustain the pretence?

You say you are a lion, but I look closer
You are a cat, a disowned pet cat, close to a loser
You say you are a big fish, a humongous whale
I look closer, you are one sardine, chased by a piranha

With your grammar you claim to be a P.H.D holder
Coming closer it was discovered you are a moulder
Of bricks, without whom the house will not be this ready
Several lexicons are there, from which you dish out the words

You claim to know everyone who matters around here and there
Yet you are alone, always I see you alone, lost to every form of care
The unseen one alone whom you appear not to at all know
But whose presence is ubiquitous, knows you through and through

Am I the only one that can see how special you are in heart?
Am I the only one that can see the radiating greatness in your path?
Am I alone or are there others who see what I see?
You mean even you do not see what I see in you?

To thine ownself then, please aspire to be true
This way, your ways no one will ever misconstrue
If you’ve been created a lion be one and eat your meat raw
If you’re a lamb, be humble chew your pretty cud with pride

You will be loved by him and by her who should love you
Not pretentious ones who want a ram to appear a ewe
And turning the word upside down with their falsehood
The world and everything in it which had been made good

To thine ownself, now and then and always, be true
For like this you can grow from your lowly state, through
The intervention of He whose plan for everyone is pure good
Be you! Be yourself! Be who you are! Be a better dude!

  6. To thine own self be true o. This is a must read. Identity crises is dealing with many people...I don't know if it's still as a result of colonial touch, we neither here nor there. Thank you for this...awesome read.

  7. Running away from being responsible while you are responsible deepens ones sorrow. It is better to accept whom you are and portray yourself as such in order to avoid "had I know". Thanks for reminding us the truth.
